In China, the use of plastic bags filled with clay as seedling containers has long been a common practice. However, this traditional method has been phased out in many foreign countries due to its negative impact on seedling quality. These containers often lead to root problems such as tangled, thin, weak, or underdeveloped roots, which are major causes of poor growth and low survival rates in plantation forests.
For years, researcher Hou Yuanzhao from the Chinese Academy of Forestry has been studying both domestic and international nursery techniques. He emphasized that modernizing China’s forest seedlings requires moving away from outdated methods and embracing advanced technologies like balanced root container seedlings. This approach, originating in France, uses non-woven fabrics and other breathable materials as containers, paired with lightweight, nutrient-rich substrates that promote healthy root development.
Why are non-woven containers better than plastic ones? The answer lies in their ability to prevent root tangling and encourage natural root growth. When seedlings are planted, they quickly establish themselves without going through a shock period. This results in faster growth, stronger resistance to drought and pests, and overall healthier trees.
The balanced root technology is considered revolutionary because it solves many issues associated with traditional seedling practices. It improves survival rates, extends planting seasons, and is especially effective in arid and mountainous regions. Additionally, it reduces the need for container recycling, lowers costs, and supports sustainable afforestation efforts.
This technology also offers multiple benefits, including high efficiency in planting, compatibility with various agricultural applications, and the potential for soilless cultivation. With slow-release fertilizers included in the substrate, seedlings can thrive for up to three months without additional feeding.
Shandong Academy of Forestry has played a key role in adapting and improving this technique since 2000. Through continuous innovation, they have developed more efficient and reliable equipment, surpassing original prototypes and setting new standards in the industry.
Recently, a low-key symposium on this technology attracted over 140 participants from across China, showing growing interest in its adoption. The technology has already been successfully applied in 14 provinces and is gaining traction internationally.
With the widespread use of balanced root seedlings, China is on the verge of a major transformation in its forestry sector, paving the way for healthier, more resilient forests and a more sustainable future.
