In the ancient land of Purple Gas Rising, a place known for its prosperity since time immemorial, history has unfolded in layers. More than 6,000 years ago, the Banpo tribe thrived here, and their early use of bone needles to sew clothes may have subtly foreshadowed the region’s future as one of the largest textile hubs in Northwest China during the 1960s and 1970s.
Centuries later, more than 2,000 years ago, the ambitions of Qin Mugong and Qiongqiao laid the groundwork for what would become the unified state of Qin Shi Huang. The area became a crucial base for expansion, shaping the destiny of an empire. In the Tang Dynasty, this region flourished under the name Changan Dongdaemun, becoming a vibrant hub of commerce and culture.
By the mid-20th century, the textile industry had taken root in Fangbao Town, forming a dynamic synergy between “Xingcheng Industry†and “Chengxing Industry.†This led to the rise of Textile City, home to over 100,000 people who enjoyed the benefits of industrial growth, including improved income, public facilities, and social stability.
However, by the 1980s and 1990s, the city faced challenges. As social demand evolved, the once-dominant textile industry struggled with outdated technology, inefficient operations, and a single-industry structure. The former "pride" of the region turned into a "mountain-heavy water complex," with many residents facing hardship.
In 2007, a new chapter began. With strong support from the provincial and municipal governments, the Textile City Comprehensive Development Zone was established. The goal was clear: to transform the old industrial base into a modern, diversified, and sustainable urban area. The development zone expanded from 5.3 square kilometers to 37 square kilometers, creating space for innovation, integration, and growth.
The comprehensive development model included regional integration, industrial restructuring, and ecological improvement. It aimed to create a multi-industry environment that would reduce economic risks and provide more job opportunities for the local population. The establishment of the Xi’an Modern Textile Industrial Park marked a key step in this transformation, attracting investment and fostering new industries such as garment manufacturing, research and development, and food processing.
Efforts were also made to improve the quality of life. A focus on full employment helped retrain and reemploy thousands of laid-off workers. At the same time, environmental initiatives, such as the Baqiao Binhe Wetland Park, enhanced the region's ecological value, making it a model for sustainable development.
Today, Textile City is no longer just a symbol of the past but a beacon of hope and progress. Its journey reflects the resilience of its people and the power of strategic planning. As the city continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the spirit of innovation, unity, and perseverance. The future looks bright, with plans for further development, increased investment, and a vision of a thriving, modern, and livable urban center in eastern Xi’an.
