India began accepting new cotton export registration on January 1, 2011

The Indian government has announced that it will start accepting new cotton export registrations from January 1, 2011. A total of 2.5 million bales—out of the 5.5 million bales approved by the government—remain available for export. The Ministry of Commerce’s Department of Trade will begin processing new applications starting January 6, with a seven-day window for submissions. According to a notice issued by the General Administration of Foreign Trade, applications for cotton export registration were accepted between December 31, 2010, and January 6, 2011. This year’s total allowed exports amount to 5.5 million bales (each weighing 170 kg), of which 3 million have already been shipped. While the exact remaining quantity is still under confirmation, sources suggest it is approximately 2.5 million bales. Earlier, a ministerial committee had authorized the export of 5.5 million bales for the 2010-11 cotton season (October to September). However, exporters were unable to meet the deadline due to delayed harvests caused by off-season rainfall, which affected the timing of cotton entering the market. Originally, the export period was set to end on December 15, but the government extended the deadline to allow exporters more time to complete their shipments. The General Administration of Foreign Trade emphasized that registration certificates will only be issued after applications are thoroughly reviewed. Each application can receive a maximum of 100,000 certificates, with a minimum of 500 bales per application. Meanwhile, cotton prices in India have risen by 12%, reaching 42,000 rupees per candy (equivalent to 365 kg). India’s cotton production for the 2010-11 season is expected to surpass 32.5 million bales (170 kg each), up from 29.5 million bales in the previous year. This increase highlights the country’s growing role in the global cotton market.
