Asmita is back, and she’s here to share her journey of conquering her fear of sewing darts with the Kyoto dress pattern. If you're anything like me—secretly a bit intimidated by darts—then the Kyoto dress might just become your new best friend. This dress calls for a total of six darts: two bust darts in the front bodice, two waist darts in the front skirt, and two back darts. Trust me when I say, if there’s a garment that can turn you into a dart-sewing pro, this is it!
For sizing, based on my measurements (35-inch high bust, 34-inch waist, and 41.5-inch hips), I went with a size 8, grading out to a size 10 at the hips.
The finished product speaks volumes about its elegance. The bold floral print paired with the delicate kantha stitch work on my chosen fabric created such a striking contrast. It’s the kind of dress that feels both playful and sophisticated—a perfect balance for any occasion. Initially, I imagined this dress would be reserved for more casual settings, perhaps paired with leggings for something a bit more laid-back. But after completing it, I realized it's versatile enough for everything from a cozy Christmas gathering to a formal event.

I’ll admit, I was initially quite nervous about tackling so many darts. Darts have always been intimidating to me, especially since I’d only worked with bust darts ending at the side seams before. But once I got started, I found that darts with legs along the waist seam were actually easier to manage than expected, especially once I adjusted them according to the position of my bust apex. And let’s not forget the back darts—they were completely new territory for me, yet turned out beautifully.
In summary, the Kyoto dress might look complicated at first glance, but it’s surprisingly approachable. The darts give the dress an air of sophistication that I absolutely adore. What’s more, this dress has proven itself to be a true all-rounder. Whether you’re heading to a beach day or attending a formal dinner, this dress fits the bill.
For my next project, I’m thinking of using a slightly heavier indigo cotton. Perhaps that one will be saved for those extra-special occasions, while I keep this one for something a bit more casual.
