In the winter of 2007, amid the lively streets of downtown Hankou, a unique high-end gallery dedicated to collecting and promoting contemporary Chinese paintings and calligraphy was born in Hubei. This space quickly became a cultural landmark, blending modern aesthetics with traditional artistry.
The gallery's exterior is simple yet elegant, while its interior exudes a refined and artistic atmosphere, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city. Nestled among the busy streets, "Doorway Paintings and Calligraphy" stands out with its calm and sophisticated taste, serving not only as an exhibition space but also as a cultural hub that preserves and promotes contemporary Jingchu culture.
It is well known in the domestic art world that local collectors often keep their own region’s artworks close. In cities like Beijing and Shanghai, modern art has thrived on the market, boosting the local art scene. However, Hubei still had a lot of potential to explore. To bring the best of Hubei’s calligraphy and painting to the public, a group of passionate Wuhan art enthusiasts came together, giving birth to "Doorway Paintings and Calligraphy."
Inspired by the philosophy of "purity and simplicity, just like the heavens," the gallery quickly gained recognition for its craftsmanship and dedication. It has collected works from renowned artists such as Chen Liyan, Zhang Yuantie, Kong Qi, and Sun Yanxiang. Their commitment to authenticity has earned praise from both artists and collectors. The gallery also regularly hosts exhibitions featuring master calligraphers and painters from across China, including cities like Beijing, Guangzhou, Nanjing, and Shanghai, as well as international partners in the U.S., UK, Japan, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand—expanding the reach of Hubei's art globally.
After three years of growth, "Doorway Paintings and Calligraphy" has become an official partner of the Calligraphers Association, involved in collecting, publishing, organizing exhibitions, and holding auctions. More importantly, it focuses on nurturing young talent by signing contracts with emerging artists in Hubei, providing them with creative space and market exposure. This effort helps build a stronger foundation for the future of Hubei’s art market.
With a mission to preserve and promote Jingchu culture, the gallery continues to contribute to the development of Hubei's cultural industry, ensuring that traditional art remains vibrant and relevant in today’s world.
