Hermès's main crocodile designer is in charge

Gaultier is set to present his final spring fashion show for Hermès in October this year, marking the end of an era for the iconic brand. Despite stepping down, Hermès continues to hold a 45% stake in Jean Paul Gaultier, making it the company’s largest shareholder since its founding. Following Gaultier’s departure, Christophe Lemaire has been appointed as the artistic director for Hermès Women's Wear, starting from the autumn and winter 2011 collections. This announcement came just two weeks after the passing of Jean-Louis Dumas, the former president and CEO of Hermès, adding a layer of emotional significance to the transition. The brand expressed deep gratitude for Gaultier’s contributions over the past seven years, acknowledging his creative impact on the house. Hermès has a long-standing tradition of collaborating with renowned designers, beginning with Martin Margiela. While Gaultier’s retirement was expected, the sudden appointment of Lemaire has surprised many in the fashion world. Lemaire, who has never launched his own fashion line or held a personal runway show, has worked for prestigious French houses such as Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Patou, Christian Lacroix, and Lacoste. He gained widespread recognition for his innovative approach to the classic Lacoste polo shirt, reimagining its design and color palette. However, his new role at Hermès is seen as a major shift. While his previous work was respected, many in the fashion industry are watching closely to see how he will shape the future of one of the most iconic luxury brands. With such a high-profile position, the pressure is on, and the fashion world is eager to see what Lemaire will bring to the table.
