According to the British "Sunday Times" website reported on January 7, most of the 29 gifts at a total price of 160 pounds (about 1407 yuan) came from Asia, as long as a small amount of clothing and necessities were produced in Britain or Europe. According to the report, Scottish Children’s Business Minister Mari Todd recently invited Scottish companies to participate in the contract for the second year of the baby box project. The programme was first implemented in August of last year and is open to all pregnant women.
The government has shown that the program has been successful, with a penetration rate of 77%—more than 22,000 boxes were issued—and it is highly satisfied.
According to the report, every piece of clothing in the box comes from China, including baby sleeping bags, vests, pants, gloves and hats.
Accessories including bibs, bath towels, nail files, and quilts also came from China, as well as soft cloths, excursion sheets, mattresses, and covers. The thermometer is also produced in China. The condoms used by moms and dads are from Malaysia, and the maternal breast pads are from Thailand.
According to reports, blankets and towels are made in Europe. The maternity sanitary napkins were produced in Nottinghamshire and a hardcover book was published in London.
The mattress was made in the UK and the other two products seem to be outsourced by Scottish companies to overseas companies.
Todd said: "2017 was a successful year for the baby box program. More than 22,000 boxes were distributed. Moms and dads were very content with the contents of the box."
"We are desperate to use Scottish products in boxes and benefit Scottish businesses. This is why we recently announced that they can bid for the supply contract for the next year," Todd said.
