Abstract: Modified montmorillonite (SMA-MMT) was modified with maleic anhydride and styrene, and then polypropylene (PP)/ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) was modified by melt blending. The montmorillonite nanocomposite is added with the graft PP-g-MAH-St as a compatibilizer. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the interlayer spacing of SMA-MMT reached 3.98 nm. Transmission electron microscopy analysis indicated that the polymer molecular chain had been inserted into the montmorillonite layer. When the graft content is 15% (mass fraction, the same below), the mechanical properties of the composites are the best, and the tensile strength and impact strength are 32.4 MPa and 79.5 J/m, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed that the addition of PP-g-MAH-St and SMA-MMT could improve the crystallization performance of PP when PP-g-MAH-St and SMA-MM'T were 15% and 2, respectively. PP is widely used, but some of its performance limitations limit its application, such as poor toughness. Rubber-plastic blending is generally used to improve the toughness. Among them, dynamic vulcanization technology is used to blend PP with rubber to improve PP toughness. Although the simple rubber-plastic blending method can improve the toughness of PP, other properties of the material are degraded. Considering the enhanced toughening properties of montmorillonite, the prepared PP/rubber/montmorillonite nanocomposite can maintain or increase the strength of the composite while further toughening the PP. At present, there are many reports on polymer alloy composites, but the research on the properties of alloys by montmorillonite is not a lot of preparation of PP/ethylene-butene copolymer (POE)/organic montmorillonite by melt blending method. Conclusion (1) MAH and St were used to modify sodium montmorillonite to prepare SMA-MMT. The interlayer spacing of montmorillonite increased from 1.23 nm to 2.0 nm. When the graft content was 15%. The spacing of the montmorillonite layer reaches 3.98 nm.
(2) Intercalated nanocomposites were prepared by melt method. The addition of grafts can significantly improve the properties of the composites. When the content of grafts is 15%, the tensile strength and impact strength of the composites reach 32.4 respectively. MPa and 79.5J/m, which is much better than PP/EPDM simple blending (27MPa81J/m).
(3) The graft and montmorillonite can be used as the nucleus of PP heterogeneous crystal, and the crystallization temperature of PP in the material is increased.
